Global X Haiti Trip 2010 and 2011

Love God. Love People. Love Haiti.

Notes

Going up

I don’t always know how to fully prepare for a mission trip before I go.  Sure, there are the logistical parts of packing, laundry, etc.  That’s the easy part for me.  But preparing my mind and my heart is another story…especially when I think of the devastation that Haiti has endured this year.

This week, I’ve been reading through the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134)  These 15 psalms were actually sung by the Hebrews as they ascended the steps of the Temple, to celebrate three different festivals throughout the year.  Regardless of where they were traveling from, it was referred to as “going up”.    The songs and the journey were meant to prepare them to worship God.

I love the visual of “going up” and “ascending” in preparation for worship.   I’m not sure what to expect when we get to Haiti, but I imagine that our team will experience things this upcoming week that will leave us heartbroken and without words.  And I imagine that most Haitans have experienced their own heartbreak and loss of words this year.  So, the simple gesture of allowing our hearts to “go up” towards God and acknowledge Him may be the most we can muster.

 “I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;

From where shall my help come?

My help comes from the Lord,

Who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2)
