I’m Back
It’s been about ten months since I left Haiti. I came here last July on my first mission trip and now God has brought me back just ten months later. Haiti looks about the same as I remember. I feel like I saw fewer tent cities than before but that could just be the neighborhoods we drove through. Either way, it is crazy to think we are less than a hundred miles from the affluence of the United States.
Staying at the New Life Guest House, I’m humbled again to hear stories of God working in people’s lives and people responding to His call. The guest house is on a complex that houses a ministry for kids with disabilities. These kids had no future and were facing death when they were brought here to get their medical, spiritual, educational, and emotional needs met. There are almost a hundred kids here who will run up and hug you without even knowing you. The ministry was started by a lady from Florida thirty some years ago when God laid Haiti on her heart and she couldn’t ignore the calling. She said they have survived on faith alone. We also met one of the girls who has been working here for the past six months. She was laid off from her teaching job and didn’t know why. God laid Haiti on her heart and she couldn’t refuse. She’s returning to the States in a few weeks to sell all her stuff and move down here permanently. She says she’ll stay until God tells her otherwise. Wow. Seeing such faith in action is amazing.
I’ll leave you with a picture of how we spent the night. The complex is a mini Eden of green grass and fruit trees in the middle of Port au Prince. We sat in this complex on a summer night with a cool breeze under a half moon singing songs and worshiping God with dozens of Haitians kids. A language and a culture away, but still together worshiping one God on a perfect Haitian night.
